FATHERLAND: A visual grief ritual

"Fatherland" is a multimedia theatrical performance that invites us to ponder connection across distances of time and space, the ways in which we might bear our unbearable stories, and acts as community grief ritual for all those who have lost an emotional or physical homeland--by force or by fate. 

The 50 minute autobiographical narrative centers on one woman’s sojourn through grief, in search of connection to her deceased absent father and her lost Haitian identity. A meta-narrative, the innovative core of the piece uses first-person storytelling to explore universal themes related to migration, land and identity loss, reclamation of self and nation through the theatrical use of memoir text, film, chants/sounds, spiritual songs and dance from Haiti.
